Summary of Research

I do experimental research in high explosives and other high energy systems.  Our facilities include high explosive test chambers for sizes up to 10 lbs TNT equivalent.  Our specialization areas include warhead design, spectroscopic diagnostic development, high speed imaging, and combustion technologies.

Internship Opportunities:

I have two research areas that would be able to support internships

1)      High explosive testing of decomposition of chemical agent surrogate materials.  We use agent surrogates for laboratory testing for safety reasons.  We’re in the process of running tests of different high explosive charges and conditions to examine how much agent is neutralized under different conditions.  The tests involve novel infrared high speed spectroscopy to monitor agent decomposition.  The student would assist a graduate student in preparing for and conducting these tests and in analyzing the data that are gathered.

2)      Spectroscopy of Plasmas relevant to Nuclear Fireballs.  We have two different electrical arc facilities that produce plasmas that are of high temperature and can contain actinide materials such as uranium.  In these plasmas, we can track the oxidation of uranium as it proceeds from the atomic metal to oxide products, possibly in mixture with soil components like silicon.  The student would assist a graduate student in conducting experiments under a range of conditions, collecting the data, and processing the data into quantitative spectra for analysis.
